What a pro does

The first question is how many fixtures are involved. One slow lavatory in a Traverse City ranch is a local problem. A basement floor drain taking water from the washing machine upstairs is not, and the plumber treats those two calls differently from the moment of arrival. Older Michigan houses complicate the read, because a home in Port Huron or Adrian may still have cast iron branch lines with a rough, scaled interior that grabs everything passing through. The plumber picks an access point, usually a cleanout, and runs a cable or a jetter sized to the pipe rather than to the fixture. Grease is the usual culprit on a kitchen line and it doesn't clear the way a hair plug does. Where a house has a laundry tub or a utility sink in the basement, that's often the honest test after the cable comes out: run it hard and watch whether the level holds. If the line clears and then reloads within a week, the plumber is looking for a defect rather than a clog.
