What a pro does

An emergency call is triage before it's repair. The plumber wants to know whether the water is clean or foul, whether it's still arriving, and what it's about to reach. In most Michigan houses the mechanical room and the panel are both in the basement, which is why a modest leak in Alpena or Sault Ste. Marie turns serious faster than the same leak would in a slab house somewhere warm. So the first moves are containment: main valve closed, or the isolation valve nearest the failure, and power cut to anything the water is heading for. Only then does anyone chase the cause. Winter emergencies cluster, since a hard freeze produces frozen lines and failed heaters and sump pumps in the same few days across the same towns. A plumber will often stabilise a house, get water back to the fixtures that matter, and return for the permanent repair once the drywall is open and the parts are on hand. That's not a shortcut, it's the order the job actually wants.

Water you can't stop, sewage inside the house, or no water at all in freezing weather. Those three cover most of it. A dripping trap or a running toilet is genuinely annoying and will still be there in the morning, and treating it as an overnight call rarely gets you a better repair.
Usually on the basement wall facing the street, near where the service line comes through the block, often with the meter right behind it. In a house on a well it'll be at the pressure tank instead. Finding it on an ordinary Tuesday is far easier than finding it at midnight in six inches of water.
If water is anywhere near the panel, a furnace, or a water heater, yes, cut the breaker to that equipment first, and stay out of standing water you can't see the bottom of. Nothing about the plumbing gets worse in the two minutes that takes.
Because the weather is the common cause. A subzero night in Marquette or Cadillac stresses every marginal line, every tired heater, and every pump on the same schedule, so the calls arrive in a block rather than spread out.
